Can anyone tell me what type and size of lintel I need to use to span a window opening of 1040mm in a new cavity wall under an existing flat roof on a ground floor porch. I've taken a doorway out and found just a couple of 4x2 timbers nailed together as a lintel.
Timber lintels are fine for carrying wooden structures such as roofs etc.
If you intend laying bricks upon the lintel on both leaves of masonry then you will need to determine the thickness of the cavity and buy a pressed steel lintel to suit, allowing for 150mm end bearings.
If you are only say carrying one leaf of masonry and having timber soffit/cradling on the outer leaf then you will need a single 100mm box lintel.
