Hi, I will be installing a UB for the loft conversion that will be bearing on an internal wall. This wall has a doorway directly below where the UB will be bearing. The door is quite low (1800) so whilst I'm taking a few bricks out for the padstone I may as well take a few more out and raise the doorway to normal height, thus needing a new lintel.
The structural engineer has specified the padstone and I know the loading that the UB will be putting onto it.
Will the lintel need to have a load capacity to match the load put onto the padstone?
I have the loading calculations and concrete lintel manufacturers publish their max loadings, so as long as I understand it correctly I can easily justify the lintel to building control.

The greater the distance between the UB bearing and the doorway lintel, the lesser the load imposed directly upon the doorway lintel.

If it is your intention to shorten the distance, I would be inclined to consult your SE. He may suggest a standard lintel is ok, or you may have to fit a short section of steel.
