I've just discovered that the 8ft concrete lintel over my downstairs UPVC window appears to be cracking along the length of it - well I think there's a large crack but there certainly seems to be large 'flakes' just hanging off.

It will need replacing and I've called a builder in to give me a quote but before he arrives, I wonder if anyone could give me a ball park figure on what I should expect in the way of a quote and whether it would be cost effectve to get patio doors in there at the same time as the lintel replaced.

I've just had someone (not a builder) tell me that a double glazing firm would take care of the lintel as part of the deal fitting the patio doors. Is this right?

Window people are capable of installing lintels, and it will probably save you some cash to do both at same time. Unless the door is larger than the current opening. But get 3 builders in for quotes then do the same with 3 window people and compare.
