Lintel

Hi. Looking for a bit of help if possible please. Im going to build a block garage at home , Its single skin with 140mm block. I need a lintel for the garage door opening which is going to be 3600 so presume will need a lintel 3900. What type lintel should i use to span this length ? There wont be much load on it just 2 courses of 140mm block above. The roof sits on a separate steel frame. Any advice much appreciated

Is the wall going to be rendered?

A 203 x 133 x 25 steel beam.

Found a concrete one 3900. Didnt know you could get concrete that length. Presume should do the trick ?

A concrete lintel could well be cheaper than steel, but heavier to lift into position.

Perfectly OK - a 3mm overhang each side is nothing.
You can overhang up to 1/3 the thickness of the block, though I wouldn't advise it in your case.

Whichever is cheaper or easier.. Long concrete lintels can fracture if not handled carefully.

Would you think 120x120 Angle iron would do the job Tony ?

Or they do 150x150

The problem with using angles is that they can rwist under load, particularly on long spans.
A bit risky I would have thought.

If the roof is independant and you're going to clad the thing why not a timber solution.

You could create a truss essentially and that would save you a lot of effort.
