Hi.
After getting a virus I had to reinstall XP. But somewhere along the way, I lost the driver for my DVD/CD player. I cannot get it from my system disc as I cannot use the drive. Infact the drive does not appear at all in my computer. System Manager tells me that the above driver is missing (Lite-On DVDRW SHW-160P6S) Does anyone know where I can download it free. I have been to a few sites that claim to be free but are not. I have also tried uninstalling and re-booting but that doesn't work either.
Any help would be appreciated

Thanks very much

You can download the driver from Here (this device should not need driver to operate correctly!). I suspect that even trying to install driver will not improve the situation as it sounds like your drive is not being recognised by Windows.

Check if drive recognised:
Goto Start/ right click My Computer and select Properties.
Select Hardware tab then Device Manager
Click on the "+" sign next to DVD/CD-Rom drives - what do you see?

I have this problem with my XP setup (although I mostly use linux these days so it's not a bother). Try this :

Download devcon.exe from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311272

save it to your c:\windows directory.

now create a text file containing

devcon rescan

and save it to the desktop as rescan.bat

once the system is booted, run rescan bat (might need to run it, wait a few secs then run again).

Your drive should re-appear
