According to this report living rooms have shrunk by a third. Hells bells just living rooms? Most new builds these days don't have viable garages. Builders don't build garages to house cars they build garages to house junk. Bedrooms will only just accomodate a double bed and on top of all that builders are building their houses out of wood and cardboard. I'm so glad that I live in a solid 1960s built bungalow. I would, never in a million years, buy a new build.

Who to blame for this mess?

  1. The planning laws have to be relaxed - only 7.7% of the UK's land is settled, the country is empty.
  2. Introduce Land Valuation Taxation. This is zero tax on the buildings focusing on the values of the land. Labour, Greens, LibDems and others all advocate it.
Then housing sizes and quality will rise.

Its the idea that naked capitalism without controls will lead to optimum solutions. This neoliberal approach simply makes exploiting people acceptable.
The root of it is appropriation of commonly created wealth by private individuals and organisations. Wealth that should stay common to pay for common services and reduce or eliminate income tax. Commonly created wealth emerges in many areas, the most easily seen is in land values. Land values are created by the economic activity of the surrounding community, not the landowner, it is not manna from heaven - but the landowners walk off with the lot.

The CIL doesnt help, its a lot in some regions.

Planning is a lot of money, and then all those expensive reports.

Maybe living rooms are the same size and people arevgetting bigger :)

No need for a CIL charge with Land Valuation Tax. Increases in land value are automatically reclaimed. The reclaimed value can be used to build infrastructure. Hong Kong built a whole metro by using taxes on land not income.
