Location of Toilet Waste Pipe

Hi all,

My builder has just fitted a new waste pipe in the floor of our bathroom, the problem is when the toilet is pushed up against the wall the base of the toilet covers the waste pipe by about 2". The builder is claiming the pipe is in the correct place and that he cant cater for all toilets. The pipe is around 6" (150mm) from the wall.

Is the builder correct or trying to pull a fast one ?

If he is correct how can I connect the tiolet outlet to the waste pipe without standing he toilet off the wall ?

Difficult to understand what your problem is; are you saying that the toilet cannot connect to the waste pipe ? If so he is an idiot "the pipe is in the correct place" can't be true is if isn't connecting to the toilet. If he was doing a pipe replacement, then the old one fitted surely, if it is a new pipe and he has brought it in under the flooring, then the joists are probably dictating the positioning in at least one direction so he may have a point, but surely he knew it was for a toilet and didn't he see the toilet before he started the work and hence understand what the complete job was !

Hi - The toilet is covering the waste pipe in the floor when pushed up against the wall (see piccy above). The job is one of conversion so this is a new toilet and the floor is concrete (its on the ground floor) so its not a problem with the joists. Arent all toilets a standard size from this perspective ?.

Without wanting to get into what the agreement was between you or your builder your best option now is to fit a flexible multiquick from your pan to the soil pipe.
May I suggest a written contract stating what your contractor is to do and how much the job will cost, that way there is no confusion.

get a big hammer big chisel and start digging
if you agreed the position in advance and its not right
get the builder back ops
bahco if the pots over the drain a flexi wont work

Box the cistern out and tile it. Builder should have allowed for it ...but an easy oversight

Yes, easy oversight. Good solution that, Hidden cistern, box round it. It might need a different pan though if existing one is close coupled.?

No. But any person, let alone plumber or builder, who has done a couple before, would know that. If he put the pipe where it is and DID have a choice about pipe position, he should have either asked about the pan, or put it nearer the wall which is never a problem with any pan because all types and shapes of connector are easily available.

"I didn't think", isn't an excuse. Make him shift it!
