I am planning to install a new loft hatch, it is 1200 x 550mm which is considerably larger than the current hole.

In order to make the hole big enough I am going to have to cut out sections of two roof joists.

I am planning to brace the joists on each side to ones that are no being cut by putting 3' by 2' timbers on each side and screw into the joists before cutting.

Has anyone put in a new hatch that has required cutting through two joists, all the articles that I can find only ever refer to one being cut, also is there a better way to support the joists than what I am planning, would be really greatful for any help and support.

Thanks
Richard

What you could do is get abit of 3x2 and span it across the joists your going to cut out and the next joist either side whats staying, then screw into the 3x2 into all joists, that way it will stop the cut out joists from sagging abit until you frame out your new hatch. ps I hope this makes sense. ;)

ps thats what you've said you'll do already. anyway thats will be fine. ;)
