Hijacking the post. No Apology. ;)

mreco, thanks for the tip on not buying the 1220 B&Q boards. I was just about to, for my 600mm centre joists. I was assuming that the extra 20mm was for the TnG to overlap over the joist at the joint of the boards. Are you sure it isn't?

My joists are 35mm wide and 100mm deep spaced 600mm apart. Are they strong enough and are there enough of them for boards?

Also, masona, you say "Are they gang nailed trusses, if so, you have to board it a difference way". My trusses are gang nailed (a new term to me!), in what way should I board it a "different" way, and why?

You have me hesitant to start now!

Cheers.

Because the gang nailed trusses are design to use smaller timber but stronger enough to take the weight of the roof tiles, shouldn't really put loft floor on top of it. Best to come off a low bearing walls by cutting out a square plasterboard above the wall then 18mm plywood or thicker on top of the walls then bigger joists on top of the plywood, the idea of this you're not using any part of the gang nailed trusses

ps; and no part of any gang nailed trusses to be cut out or altered

Thanks, masona.

There are no bearing walls on the upper floor, so that's not an option, but I understand the point.

I've decided just to drop some floor boards across the joists to help spread the weight of anything that does go up there. It won't be anything heavy. I was beginning to realise that flooring it wasn't an option - that the floor would weigh much more than anything I want to store up there! In fact, the heaviest thing that will ever get up there will be me. Floor boards will help spread *my* weight too. Nobody else will ever go up there so I may not even screw them down (though I might put a big warning sign near the loft hatch just in case!).
