Hi

Our 1930s loft is quite big and easy enough to walk around the centre bit, so its being used for storage with boxes just balanced on things and squashing the insulation. Beams are 4x2.

I want to improve insulation as well, so was thinking of laying more 4x2 at 90' to the existing beams (screwed through), and laying insulation between and screwing T&G chipboard on top.

I'd leave 1m around the edge without boarding

Generally speaking, OK to do that, or bad idea?

fine

cross battening also adds some rigidity, especially if you screw down a deck of ply.

there is also a way of using rigid foam insulation, but after Grenfell I've gone right off it.

So no potential issues with airflow / possible condensation by raising and boarding?

(Loft has new breathable felt and I won't be going within 1m of the eves, not looking to insulate rafters etc)
