Loft cold water tank ball valve

Hi guys we had a guy out from the council as we are in a council house chech the ball valve in the loft as water was peeing out the water flow and as their is no way to isolate the tank we have to switch of from the mains. Not good with a 3 month and a 2 year old basically he said you need a new ball valve but he does not have one so will have to wait till Monday. I could easily fit one myself but have had a look in screw fix and b&q but can only find a plastic ball valve for a wc? Would this work?

He didn`t carry a part 2 float valve on the van Bet he was from a private contractor subbed to the council . Bloody farcical - back in the 80`s as an employee of a H.A , I had a Transit full of spares for plumbing and other repairs

That's an easy way to get paid for two calls.

If you want to buy and fit a new valve from Screwfix, get a Pegler Prestex Part 2 float valve. Screwfix stock it, £8.59, it is brass and good quality.

You can save a pound or two by buying something not as good.

Not only did he not have a float valve it looks like he didn't have any 15mm iso's,
if I left a family with young kids without water for that reason I'd get hauled over the coals good style.

Hey guys this problem has just got even worse found the float valve from screw fix, was about to go get one when my partner said their was no hot water better yet no water from any taps just a trickle. So my first thought was tank must be empty so turned on stop clock went in the loft the tank was pretty much full but still just a trickle from taps?

I remember from a previous prob where I had to re pressure the red cylinder tank to 1.5-2 bars as it was pretty much below 1, turned the valve to let the water in and boost up the pressure but nothing?

When we turned the hot tap on we got a trickle then it stopped and you can hear a trickle from the pipe that goes from the tank to the hot water cylinder?? Now I don't think I can use the heating as pressure is too low and boiler will shut down as it did before.

You've got an air lock in the hot water system from roof tank to cylinder-or from cylinder to taps . Now the heating pressure vessel - did you open both the little black valves ,and did they actually turn - not just the plastic lever turning on the spindle

If the cold water tank in the loft is now full, there us a fair chance the airlock will go if you turn the kitchen (not bathroom) hot tap on for a couple of minutes, then off for ten, then on for two. Airlocks sometimes clear on their own, given time.

Failing that, is the sink tap a mixer? If not, have you got a bit if hosepipe that will tightly fit the spouts on the hot and the cold taps?

Fill a couple of buckets with cold water to refill the WC cisterns after they have been flushed.

P.s. the fault in the cold tank is nothing to do with the boiler pressure vessel, so forget about that. If you open the repressurising valves when the incoming watermain is turned off, the boiler pressure will go down, not up.

Right looks like the water to fill the pressure tank up was from the main water supply which is why would not fill, so have now got it back up to 2 bar was very slow normally you hear the water rush through but it was silent and went up slowly, I had both open yes. Taps are much better not perfect but think that's coz their is a couple of air locks.

The kitchen cold tap, and any other mains-pressure cold taps, will not work while the stopcock is off. Fill the kettle, do babys bottle, put bottles or glasses of drinking water in fridge.
