Loft Hatch Cylinder

Hello board!

I've put in a loft hatch but the supplied catch fails at the scariest of moments, releasing the hatch to swing just forehead-height as i walk under it.

I want to install one of those gas piston type things - that are on the boot of a car. They make the whooshing noise as you open it. Would it help to slow down the hatch; if the catch failed and secondly - what are they really called??? I can't find one anywhere searching for 'gas opener hatch' etc. etc.
