Hi,

I want to insulate my loft properly, the stuff that's up there at the moment is pretty ropey, been there since the house was built in the 80s.

The recommended depth is 270mm, which will put it well above my joists. But, like most people I guess, my loft is part-boarded and I store quite a lot of stuff up there.

What's the best thing to do? Presumably ramming the insulation down to the current joist depth and replacing the loft boards will reduce its effect. But I can't imagine raising my loft boards on stilts will be particularly secure, nor easy to do.

So what's the solution?

Fix joists, depth to suit, perpendicular to your existing ones and board over those. Place 1 layer of insul between the existing ceiling joists and one between the new. Won't matter too much if its a bit compressed.

Yikes! The cost just escalated significantly! From about £23 all-in to about 5 times that!!
