My place is 300 years old and I'm trying to improve the insulation generally. The roof spaces all now have at least 10" of fibre roll at joist level. The pitch of the roof only has nailed stone slates and as such is full of gaps, which is good for ventilation but not heat retention. I thought about stapling foil roll insulation to the undersides of the joists. Will this be beneficial?

Surely you want the insulation above the ceilings, not below the roof? What's the point of insulating the attic?
