Hi
I have a 1970's two up, two down terrace which has a loft which is currently badly insulated.
I am having my bathroom done and they are sticking in down lights (the super duper fire resistant low heat blah blah) and checking the electrics and want access to the loft which is currently boarded and used heavily for storage. The roof space is quite low and is accessed by crawling around.
My joists are only around 100mm high (maybe smaller) and I don't want to increase the height in order to fit the recommended 270mm insulation as it would become a major job and the space in the loft would become so restrictive
What I want to do is the following and would like comments and/or suggestions i.e. the little insulation is a waste of time, boards and insulation are to close etc.
1. I want to remove the current boards
2. Let the electrician do his work including installing of the downlighters
3. Cover the downlighter in some recommended breathble shroud
4. Lay Knauf Combi Cut Loft Insulation 100mm in between the rafters on top of the current insulation and up to the shroud leaving the top of the shroud available for air circulation
5. Lift wires so they sit on top of the insulation
6. Then fit new boards cutting circles where the shrouds are so the shrouds pop through the holes
With the depth of the joists there may be slight compression of the insulation and I am slightly worried about the wires being stuck between the insulation and the floor boards. Are there any better low depth high insulation products out there which would be better?
Looking into this I am suprised that A) there is better low depth materials (man we have landed people on the moon and can't have adequate insultation under 100mm thickness) and B) there aren't more examples of insulating restricted access lofts which are required for storage in small houses
Any help or comments would be truely appreciated
