I have a ABRU timber loft ladder kit that is 550mm wide. However in the place where I need to install the kit, the joists are only 5350mm apart. Any suggestions would be much appreciated...but please bear in mind that I am not an experienced DIYer

If you're replacing and existing hatch it may has some arrangement like this - if not the same principle remains for widening the hole, or creating one are the same
So there may be a trimmer joist which may be able to be moved over slightly.
However this will damage some of your ceiling so that needs repairing.. If you're not great with DIY I'd consider getting someone in - or find a different hatch to fit? You can't just trim the joists..
