moved into an old flat, would like to renew and relay new floorbords so they can be sanded

is this a costly experience?

is it easy enough to be done by myself as long as i watch for pipes etc

yep it's a job you can do yourself. I'm just a tad confused though, are you going to replace ALL the boards or just some? If it's all of them they dont need sanding.

Modern board will be just a tiny bit smaller both in thickness and width, then the originals, so, if you just replace some, you will need to either get the new boards especially cut to size (which shouldn't be that more expensive than buying standard sizes) or pack them up a bit. (modern boards are usually about 2mm thinner).

Lift the boards up sensibly. You will notice that they are only nailed along the edge, about 1/2" inch in. That is to allow for possible cables or pipes to run along the middle of the board. Follow that procedure when laying new boards. Only nail within about an inch of the edge unles you KNOW there are no cables and pipes there.
and away you go...

Other option would be to get pre-finished boards as you're renewing all. Saves time, money and stress on sanding and applying finish.
