Loose slap on step into house

Hi

I have a loose slab on the step into the house which I need to fix.

My thinking is to remove slap and chisel away existing mortar, then apply a sand and cement mix replace slab using mallets to line up with other slab.

Would my approach be sufficient? What would I put in the gap between the 2 slabs?

Sounds good. Use mortar for the joints.
