About 10y ago we did a loft conversion which included putting in a shower room on the top floor and changing over the central heating and hot water to a closed system with a hot water heater. We did not need a pump to get water to the top floor. Pressure was fine unless someone ran the bath on the middle floor at the same time as running water on the top floor.

About 2y ago we started to notice that water pressure in the shower was falling although the sink and toilet seem to be fine. It was especially a problem if we wanted to turn off the shower and then turn it back on usually anytime within about 30min. More recently I have noticed that occasionally when I turn the shower off the water does not stop unless I turn it on and then off again.

We had some plumbers in to have a look at it and to fix the toilet cistern which was coming off the wall. They turned the water off at the mains outside and unfortunately the water did not come back on when they turned it back on. Over the course of about an hour the water came back to the downstairs so they thought there might be a blockage. They tried flushing the system as much as they could but this did not seem to make any difference. Then over the course of the next day or so the pressure gradually built up again leaving us with just the original problem of poor pressure in the top floor shower which they had been unable to solve.

Anyone have any ideas what might be causing the problem and how we can fix it? We would be exceedingly grateful for any advice as we seem to have come to a dead end.

It is possible we have a sticky mains stopcock as when the drive was block paved the area for the water meter and stopcock was left filled with sand and rubbish and the plumber had to dig it out to find it.

However, I don't think that will affect the top floor shower as the problem seems to be more with the hot water supply. I forgot to say that if the shower was turned on ok then turned off and turned on again within 30 mins, the cold water supply was usually ok. So if you needed to use the shower you could but only with cold water.

So I suspect the problem is somewhere between the hot water cylinder and the hot water supply to the mixer shower.
