There are two rule books available for the LOTR S.B.G. one is the normal version and the other is the Mines of Moria version. Does anyone out there know which is better for a beginner?

Have you read the book? I just couldn't read "The Council of the Elves" chapter.
Looking back, I realise I read the whole book just because it was one of those things I knew I kind of should do. I don't think I enjoyed it, or even understood it.
