Loud thump from pipes

Hi guys,

I have a weird noise issue in our new house (to us that is, it was built in the 1950s, central heating added early 80s I think?).

It has a combi boiler downstairs (Semia Condens). If I run the hot water OR the heating for any length of time, what appears to be the pipes in the bedroom floors upstairs (both rooms) emit a really loud thump sound every few minutes, like someone has hit the pipe with a mallet. As I type, there's been no heating on nor hot water run for several hours, all exposed pipes are stone cold, yet I'm still hearing this noise. The only way to avoid it is not to use the system at all.

The noise also happens as the heating is warming up, along with the usual old house ticking etc, so I presume what's happening is one or more hot pipes running too closely through joists in the bedroom floors, thumping as they expand, and then again when they cool. I just can't imagine how tightly they must be in there for it to make the noise for so long.

Does this ring any bells with anyone? I'm guessing I'll need to start pulling up floorboards to diagnose this one, or would a plumber be able to confirm this without me doing that (obviously if it is this, I'd still have to pull 'em up to fix it/get it fixed.

Any thoughts gratefully received!
