Hi All

Does anyone know if a Low Profile Jigsaw is available, as all the ones i've seen are too tall for a job I have to do. The space I have to make the cut is between floor joists, and under an internal wall so I cannot from above.

I have thought about most other methods available to me, but can't think of any other method than the a jigsaw in the style of a Angle Grinder.

Thanks

Salem.

What you want is called a body grip jigsaw. Most of the industrial/trade styles of jigsaw like Bosch, deWalt, etc used to offer this as an option

Thanks for your reply, will look into that. Thanks for the info.

How about one of those wheels for a 4" grinder with chainsaw teeth for cutting wood. I used one called an arbortech but I think other companies make them.

I had thought of one of those, have seen them used in wood carving. Then I thought of what might happen if it kicked back in a very confined space......... Chainsaw Massacre came to mind....

Just a thought, if it's a one off job wouldn't it be cheaper to drill through the joist with a joist brace and centre bit then connect the holes using a pad saw? I use a Milwaukee angle head drill (wrong link, I know, but the Milwaukee is the same as the Sioux except for the colour), but you can get right angle adaptors for most power drills to do the same sort of thing and use short auger bits for clearance.

whats the cut for ie how accurate or straight has it got to be?

Hi all

Firstly thanks for all your replies.

The timber I need to cut is one of the original ceiling joists, it is being pushed down by the timberwork from the loft conversion we had done, I need to put a small notch in it to relieve the pressure. I had it inspected and was advised it is due to settlement of the new work we had done, which is what it looks like.

The problem I have is the timber is between the new floor joists, under the new gable wall timber run, which is at 45 deg angle hence the space problem, the SE said all I need do it remove approx 1/2 inch of timber from the ceiling joust and all will be fine and dandy.

the only thing I have found so far that would work is This. But I cannot find a hire shop who has one.

Not a massive job then? You could do that with a swiss army knife

You could do it by hand in less time than it takes to plug a powr tool in. Keyhole saw or padsaw.

I've installed a 4 1/2 inch wood cutting blade from a Makita miniature circular saw in my Bosch hand grinder, and used that to cut wood in tight places.

Yeah, it's scary, but it does work.

Make sure the safety guard is on the handgrinder so if the blade comes flying apart at 12,000 rpm, parts won't go flying toward your face.

But, I agree with a previous post that a SHARP hand saw will cut through that joist faster and easier than you prolly expect.
