I think you may have posted this in the wrong section but anyway.....
The best thing i found to do was put up a false ceiling. This would mean fitting woodon supports across you existing ceiling (you could take the old one down first) and putting up platerboard and fixing to the new woodon supports. You'd then need to either dry line or skim the new plasterboard.
