The plastering on my kitchen ceiling is all over the place and it slopes in placecs so i thought the best solution other that taking the ceiling down was to put in a false ceiling
I was thinking about using tongue and groove cladding
Was going to screw batons into the joists but not sure how to locate the joists throught the ceiling i tried to use a stud/cable finder but it was no good so took it back
I was told 16" center but is that 16" from the wall to the center of the 1st joist ?
The house was built in 1900 original ceiling
Size of kitchen: 167" x 122 1\2"
Is tongue and groove cladding the best way to aproach this ?
Cheers

Well put the post in the plastering forum then. That's what it is there for.

Have a tap with a hammer, you should near enough find the timbers by sound difference.
Use a bradawl and tap it into the board to find each outer edge of joists, then mark the centres.
Do this on both sides of room, string a chalk line across, marking all joists centres.
It doesnt matter about the holes, as you are covering up.
Screw 50mm x 25mm timbers along the central lines.
You now have something you can see and fix to, if paneling is your choice then go for it.
In my opinion I would plasterboard and skim.

it would be easier and quicker to screw straight to the ceiling. But if you lower it you can insulate and put in down lighters etc.

Once you've found the original joists, i'd screw new battens "across" the ceiling. That way, you can straighten and level the ceiling ready for either plasterboard or wood linings.y
