Hi I have this programmer for a number of years this circa 15. It is set on constant fo CH and twice A day for HW. In the last couple of days when showering late in the the day the water is tepid. It appears that it is not heating the hot water on PM setting. Yesterday pm I put it on constant got a tank of hot water and decided to check my settings. I turned off both the CH & HW settings and whilst checking them the boiler fired why?
If the programmer is faulty can I just buy a new one and connect it to the existing backplate like I did last time?

Yes ;)

I would check to see if either mid position valve, or zone valves are working properly first though.

Thanks for this how do check the zone valve it is situated beside hot water tank I do not understand mid valve never heard of it my system is 30 years old not all of it have had the zone valve/boiler/programmer replaced in that time may be it doesn't have one

Do you never have your system and boiler serviced?

Still getting intermittent fault of not heating hot water when it should other times it does. Just checking it over and turned the CH & HW off but the boiler carried on working???
I also have noted the boiler will fire with both the CH & HW off when I turn up the boiler thermostat. Have I got a dodgy controller??

Might be, but more likely to be a zone valve problem.

I am still getting HW & CH does this mean the zone valves are working or not? The boiler is firing whether the programmer is on or off!!!

Sorry meant to add earlier the light on the pump a Grundfos UPS2 stays on all the time which I had not noticed before this situation arose. It is a new pump replaced 3 months ago

I saw somewhere to tap zone valves I did with my knuckle and the light on the pump went out, but boiler doesn't appear to want to fire now?!

On it's own, that means nothing.

For 2 port valves (2 pipes connected), the programmer switches on the motor in the zone valve. When the valve has moved to the required position, a switch in the valve activates the boiler/pump.
Therefore, boiler/pump operating apparently on their own is usually due to a failure in the valve.

If you have a 3 port zone valve (with 3 pipes connected to it) the boiler is controlled from both the valve and the programmer, but similar faults can occur.

Thanks they r 2 port valves I have 3 one controls upstairs one down and one near the hot water cylinder. How do I decide which one is faulty ?
