A travel agent I spoke to, said that in his party of 10 there were 8 who had things stolen from their suitcases when he went to JNB.

Does anyone have any experience of the £5 wrapping they do at Heathrow or the coloured and padlockable security straps?

The typical fabric suitcase can just be cut open so easily it makes me wonder if its worth bothering about. But I dont want to lose my ARGI tee shirt as they may become collector's items in the future.

Am sure your aware Tony, my wife and I travel alot,(her much more than me). She and her colleagues often use this service for thier crew bags/cases. Ive used it as piece of mind, though I carry valuables in flight bag. Golf clubs are my biggest worry.

Samsonite cases theres your answer.

Going over to France are you??

;)

France is June or July!

As original posting said, its to JNB which is one of the worst airports for pilfering!

Then on to BUQ by car!

When I used to travel a lot and worked abroad, I had a very trusted old blue cheap suitcase which went all over the world for 25 years and was never touched. Not surprising as it looked so battered that no one would expect anything valuable inside!

I last used it about 2003 to LOS. However, as I am getting older, its time for me to use the ones with wheels like everyone else does!

LOS? BUQ? JNB?

Why are you talking in abbreviations?

Cause its a secret ;)

Its not the airport in joberg you need to be wary of, its the streets.
Never been myself and never will after hearing tales from wife and friends.

airport abreviations..

BHX = Birmingham International..
LAX = LosAngeles International...
CFU = Corfu
etc

london heathrow - UK, Kotoka - Ghana, Ferihegy - Hungary, Larnaca - Cyprus...

very strange travels..

ever been to BUM?

I have travelled a great deal since I was 18 and a backpacker.
I always travel now with a Hard Shell suitcase. It is much better for security and protects valubles.
People laughed at me taking a suitcase on small boats in Thailand (but nothing stolen)!
I always lock it in hotel rooms as well and guess what....nothing stolen anymore!
:D

But hard shell suitcases in the wheelie bin format are VERY expensive!

They also make me think that they might steal the suitcase itself!

The other point is that an expensive suitcase would be expected to contain expensive things!

But I dont want my ARGI tee shirt stolen though.

Perhaps Mike only goes to "nice" places? At least he can sit on his suitcase if he gets stuck when planes boycott the airports in Thailand!

I know it sounds paranoid, but I have a small bicycle lock for chaining the suitcase handle to radiator or bed. Most maids don't have croppers on their trolly so give up on nicking! :)
Europe is a bad place for petty theft though, last time it was out of my jacket pocket. Could not get into my suitcase.
Don't worry about your T shirt, they don't register anybody to gas fit elsewhere!!
