Not a new idea. I saw that on that technology programme that comes on Saturday or Sunday mornings a couple of years ago. Inductive charging via the road surface.

We did - I remember them well (particularly, as a kid, watching them 'turn around' at the end of their run!). However, one doesn't have to think of the past given how many trains now use overhead electricity.

there are so many variables to worry about

a magnetic feild will have a sweet spot i would think with a greater or smaller distance less efficient at transfer
you will get magnetic forces that will to some extent affect the vehicle handling and may upset the balance and change stability
there will also be drag on the vehicle that may or may not be significant on the mileage range
there are also perhaps around 40% losses so 40% more energy need to be used for the same distance increasing costs per mile
