Mains Entry to 50 Gallon Cold Water Storage Tank

Hi,

In regard to the above could anyone state if it is nessessary to fit a metal plate for rigidity between the mains supply and the 50 gallon plastic storage tank in loft.

Seen it a couple of times before and wondered if they are generally fitted!
