Hoping for some advice. I have an early 90's house and have removed the old gas fire which had already had the gas pipe capped off by a gas safe professional. I removed the cast concrete fire surround and all the vermiculate and have installed a reinforced lintel to get the required 814mm height. I am removing a brick width each side to achieve 814mm width but wanted to know whether it was safe to remove the cast concrete funnel in order to make it easier to install a concrete board register plate once I've connected up the vitreous enamel flu pipe to the chimney liner.
Is it OK to chop out the cast concrete piece on either side of the fireplace, highlighted below?
