is there anything to stop me making the gap in the wall to the drive 1/2 metre wider (will simply be taking .5M off one wall and making the gates slightly larger). nothin will have to be changed in the street (kerb is really low anyway so that wouldnt have to be changed)

As long as its not a listed building, you can do it. Although I would recomend you build a pier on the reduced end.
