I had a firm out twice now to try stop a persistent smell from hatch to sewer which is inside my house. They fitted a new hatch the first time. 2nd time called out for same smell issue have removed some gravel from the seal and have put grease around the metal edge of the manhole where it meets the concrete at floor level. Now I have plastic bags taped over my hall floor to keep the grease from being walked around my house which isn't really a satisfactory solution (operative used a whole roll of my kitchen roll dabbing off the excess grease but it still comes of to the touch). What can I do ? This is inside my hallway so is not only walked regularly but is on show.

A good example why having manholes are no longer permitted within homes
Reminds me of a job I did many many years ago: My company made a large lean to conservatory, when the roof was being glazed the installer discovered that one of the roof glass panels wasn’t made the right size and it hit the cast iron soil pipe, so the installer got his grinder out and cut a slot in it…..I knew nothing about it until a few months later when I made a site visit for another job and the customers mentioned they had a smell they couldnt get rid of, they had no idea what caused it, but I spent some time investigating and found it……I could easily have kept quiet, but I couldn’t do that, it cost me over a £1k to sort out.

It was a double seal manhole cover, but the concrete around it has got on the seal quite a bit, so I think this isn't helping.
Is applying the grease at the level of the floor /hatch normal and effective? And if so how to get around it getting on everything. I'm puzzled on how this solution is supposed to be workable inside a home.

It is a bodge.

If concrete has got on the seal it needs all cleaning off and new seals applied.

A double sealed manhole cover should fully seal and hold pressure, it shouldn’t leak at all.
