Hello.
We have a wide chimney breast downstairs and a narrow one in the bedroom above so the chimney slants across to the center of the fireplace.
The chimney has a gas flue liner from a central heating back boiler installed about 40 years ago. The gas fire is still in use very occasionally although the boiler is not. Is it possible water may have entered the flue through the top cowl and damaged it at the curve point. Letting the bricks there get damp.
The marks are at the top left of the wide chimney breast and follow the diagonal for about 15 inches. A sort of blue grey colour showing through the wallpaper there.
There is nothing showing in the bedroom though the paper up there is painted
Any help much appreciated. jay
