I have changed ( i know i shouldnt of, but i have!) the master socket in my house. There are 2 pairs of wires entering the house tho. I have connected the orange and the white up and everything seems dandy, but what are the other two wires for? Are they for another line if i wanted one? or do i need them for the existing connection?

They will be spare cores, you don't need to do anything with them.

You probably have a d/w No10 feeding the house from the pole, they come with two pairs of wires inside, complete with three yellow suspension strands ( underneath the little plastic protector fitted on the end of the cable ).

The green black pair is used as a second line, so you can disregard it.

BT sensiblly put in dropwire with two pairs nowadays, that way if someone orders a second line or if one wire in the cable fails they don't have to string up a new dropwire.

You would think that wouldn't you plugwash ? But, in practice, if the fault proves to be on the D/W, we have to change it. Also, if a second line is required in a different location at the house, another D/W is supposed to be erected to supply that.

The only time that a fault can be repaired by using the green/black pair is if the existing D/W doesn't meet the current minimum height requirements and the new one if erected wouldn't either. Then, in the meantime, we have to put in a form to the control, requesting a larger pole to replace the old one.
