Matching colours for 2 different woods

Hi,

I just bought a house which has had a dividing wall removed to create a through lounge.

The property still has the wood block flooring which I'd love to keep, however different woods were used in what would have been the front and back rooms leaving a 2-tone floor. Naturally I'd like to try to blend the colours between rooms but was wondering what would work best.

Can i clear varnish the darker wood and stain the lighter wood until the two match? Or should I just do the lot in a dark colour?

Has anyone else faced the same problem (and got a satisfactory end result)?

Easier to stain the lighter wood to match the darker with a stain then varnish or a varnish tinted with wood dye

Thanks. I applied a coat of coloured "rich mahogany" varnish to the light side, and clear varnish to the dark side and it's an excellent match...

BUT I didn't do a very good job with the coloured varnish and there are dark patches all over the floor where I overlapped strokes. I don't want to use any more coats of colour since the colour match is so good (apart from the dark patches). Is there anything I can do to thin the varnish where I've got the overlapping bits? I'm worried that even if I do put on another coat the dark bits will just get darker...
