Matching door finish

Hi,

I want to replace the brass finish door handles I have in my house with chrome finish. Most of the doors are gloss finished single panel doors, but three are glass panelled wax finished. When they were waxed, the handles were already finished so I have the unfinished wood underneath. I cannot find a handle with a backplate big enough to cover this unfinished wood so am trying to find what has been used the first time.

Once I have an idea, I'll try for a match behind the backplate, but does anybody have an idea what they are finished with?

Looks like a coat of varnish, what makes you think it's wax?

For some reason I hadn't even considered varnish, probably because it's not very smooth. I think that you're right though. Thanks
