Friend's door was rubbing in the middle at top so I planed it off but he had someone come round and use an impact driver on top screw which pulled it in. Is this the best way?

It’s the best way if that was the problem , identifying the problem correctly is the best way to fix anything.

never ever ever use an impact on restricted screws
by restricted i mean screws where the extra effort cannot be absorbed by the head pulling deeper into the timber
with hinges the grip is restricted with zero give so you exceed the grip you strip the thread hole
always better to use drill drive slow speed and iff you havent mastered the nack to stop at correct tightness on the trigger use a hand screwdriver for the last 2 or 3 turns

If Tightening the screws works, then it saves planing. The high tech impact drivers have a sensor and/or low speed setying, otherwise use a slow drill speed or a low torque setting.

The door was rubbing? You planed the top which presumably fixed it? So why did he then get someone to attack it with an impact driver?

I always use an impact driver on hinges, never had a problem .Very easy to gauge with three speed driver .

1 or 2 if in a hurry , or 3 if dinners ready .
never go above 1 unless you have the skills to judge as the cupboard door seems to be a full sized door and no7-8/3.5-4mm screws the impact may "stall" and require hand turn or careful on 2position as the electronics restrict the power on one ---at least on my dewalt 887 indeed it actually has a little screw symbol opposite the 1 position
but remember impact vary vastly and results with one may be nothing like an other

The locks on our upstairs bathroom and downstairs wc wouldn’t lock as the deadbolts were just catching on the door plate as I suspected the hinges were worn and the doors had dropped slightly. I’d never bothered fixing them as the doors were working fine and not catching and it was just us indoors but we had a houseful coming round at Christmas and I had orders to sort them out. I tried filing the door plate out with a mini file but was getting nowhere. I looked at the hinges and the bloke who had fitted them (my mate!) had packed them out with pieces of cardboard between the hinge and the door frame. Just removing one layer of cardboard from the top hinge fixed my problem.
