The end grain / cut edge - if not using an edging strip, what is the best way to paint it ?

even after sanding to what seems a reasonable edge I still always find it needs five or six coats, all rubbed down between each, before I can start to get a good surface. It just seems to suck the paint in.

Its a right faff - anyone got a better method ?

Bearing in mind that MDF is basically compressed dust and therefore has great particle area the only thing you can really do is to use a genuine MDF primer which is heavily talc thickened ......this dries just below the surface and helps the top coats to adhere and not sink in so much.
