I need to tile onto some mdf boxing I've made. I've been told to seal it with pva before I tile. Is this ok?

Many thanks.

depends if its going to be subject to lots of water, as MDF will expand like buggery if it gets wet and blow your tiles off.

also pva isnt water proof.

Hang around here long enough mate and you'll learn that PVA is only for use in controlling suction when plastering ;)

I think you need an acrylic sealer. Someone who knows will be along soon...

You should not use MDF as a tile base, its even more crap than chipboard; you should have use plasterboard for the boxing. The water in the tile adhesive will probably be enough to wreck the MDF but if you really want to chance it you could try sealing it with a few coats of SBR or acrylic primer & leave it to dry thoroughly before tiling.

You should never use conventional PVA on any tile base, it remains water soluable & if you use it in a wet area, chances are your tiles will fall off eventually.

Ah mdf wasnt the beat then. Its a surround for a toilet that I've built so won't be subject to any water. I'll try some of the recommended sealer.

Many thanks.

You can tile straight onto mdf , no seal required, sticks very well provided it stays dry.

Thanks for the replies. I understand I shouldn't have used mdf but I have and removing it will be very awkward. Has anybody tiled onto mdf? How did you prime it and did it last?

Many thanks.

No problem mate; good to see my earlier advise mirrored by another experienced professional. ;)
