plywood is better for strength

mdf gives you better finnish when painted routering and dosent splinter
mdf will also sag under its own weight [so will ply but not as much]

To get the best of both it is possible to get ply with an mdf veneer on top. Its called MDO Ply.

Plywood has strength in one direction only, as regards MDF it has got uniform strength in all the directions thereby reduction of wastage.

i though ply was built up with wood whos grain is at differing angles - producing a piece of wood that has equal strength in all directions.

plywood is a lamination of several pieces of thin woods with the grain at 90 degrees to the last lamination. try snapping a bit compared to mdf, once youve finished huffing and puff youll come to the conclusion that ply is stronger

Wrong! Mr. Tickle had it right "Ply is built up with wood whose grain is at differing angles - producing a piece of wood that has equal strength in all directions.". MDF is relatively weak and not stiff in comparison to plywood as any sag test will demonstrate. It is however cheaper to produce, hence it's widespread use in furniture where its' deficiencies can be engineered out through design
