megane keeps stalling every time i stop! help!

i have a 1.4 automatic renault megane year 1995. it has always been a pain to start, but of recent every time i slow down at a junction or to stop in general the engine idles really unsteady and then cuts out, i have had the spark plugs and h.t leads changed and now it wont even start for the first few attempts. if anyone may have any idea what the problem could be or could offer any advice i would be really grateful.

I don't fully understand your description, in which you say both:

"it has always been a pain to start"

and

"now it wont even start for the first few attempts"

...as if there's been a change.

Regarding the stalling, it's either fuel or ignition, and my money is on fuel.

Does this engine have a fuel filter? If so, has it been replaced or cleaned in accordance with the service schedule?

These cars seem to have lots of electrical probs and what you are describing may be related to the crank position sensor.

agree with paulie but if its just ilde, then replace the idle control valve

check the rubber seal on the vacum hose going into the brake servo

Mine got to be more & more hard to start, and would 'die' at low revs. I had to put it in neutral at traffic lights, and keep the revs up! Got the "Flywheeel sensor" (Top Dead Sensor?) replaced, now it's perfect. See "Renault Megane - Starting problem - coils".
