Metal lathe in ceiling

Hi, first time poster here looking for advice

We are looking to convert our integral garage this year into a play room. I'm hoping to do some of the internal work myself and then get trades in to sort electrics and new windows/doors.

I know the existing ceiling needs to come off so I can get PIR between the joists above then reboard over the top. I've gone to do it today and been knocked back by what looks to be a metal gauze/mesh going throughout with a concrete like finish. Not the soft plasterboard I was hoping to break through!

So my questions are what is this technique? How would I go about removing it? Is there any asbestos risk?

I don't know if this helps you at all, but I have removed several internal arch ways that have been plastered this way. The plasterer had used the mesh to bond the plaster to. Presumably as the mesh was moldable to the shape they required.

I may also be wrong, but that may be some kind of fire proofing before the plaster if your garage is internal as you stated.

Thank you thats helpful and fireproofing spinds sensible as the garage is non habitable but there is a bedroom above.

Can I ask how you managed to remove them? I hope there is a more efficient way than taking a sledgehammer to it as that seems to be the force required. I did think about using an angle grinder to cut out sections, but have no idea where cables are positioned

Unfortunately, it was a dusty job! The mesh had been nailed to the stud timbers so it was a case of making a hole and pulling off as much as I could. Then went round after and removed the nails.

Someone may come along with an easier method!

Sorry - I just can't get the image of children trying to use a ceiling mounted metal lathe out of my head!
