I am having some new wiring done at the moment in my house and the sparky has told me i need my meter tails replaced because the old ones are to small and this will involve breaking the seals on the meter to do the change over , i am a little concerned about getting into trouble with the electric company when they come to read the meter next time , the sparky has told me it will be ok but i would like to know for sure if it is or will i get into serious s**t over this , any advice / help much appreciated .

This isn't a problem. The spark will snip the seals on the main fuse remove it while he changes your tails from the meter to the CU. He will also snip the seal to the meter to get to the new tails in.

DNO's are not bothered about these seals being snipped. It will also be obvious to them from the new tails the reason they were cut.

When you get your EIC make a copy with a covering letter to post to your DNO to explain that you have had work done and that the seals need replacing.

And have the electrician fit an isolator, (if he wasn't already planning to) to make future CU additions/replacements easier.

Yep, unless you change your consumer unit quite often, and I doubt even RF does that, they are pointless, they will become out of date at the same rate as the CU you fit.

The main isolator is essential, as modern CU's are obsolete within a few years, and they are impossible to update with new breakers etc after that time, as new ranges are brought out.

My supplier is doing this for free so couldn't refuse and got it done! Suppose an extra piece of mind for the humble non-spark nice to know I can poke about anywhere in the CU ;)

Thank's for all the advice guy's .
I think the this issue will be ok now as i have another problem .

When the sparky did the tail replacement he found that the supply " head "
was live and he showed me with some kind of tester that when he touched any part of it , it lit up the tester and he said that this was because this thing is so old and made from metal and being in a damp basement does not help , so he got in touch with the supply company and after making 9 phone calls and spending 2 hours on the phone we managed to get some guy to come round and check it and they will be coming on monday morning to replace the thing . so i suppose they will fit some new seals after doing the repair and all will be ok .

When changing a CU i always tell the customer to contact the DNO and ask for them to fit an isolator not been refused yet
