Hi, can you tell me, if I am installing a combined microwave/grill in a new kitchen with a watt loading of 1990, in addition to an electric oven (in a different location) does this have to be wired back to the consumer unit direct on a separate cable like you have to do with the oven? Or do you just plug it into an ordinary kitchen socket? Thanks.

Anything less than 2KW is normally regarded as suitable to fit a plug, so you should be OK.

Is there a kettle and a toaster on the same circuit though? If you are having a new circuit added for the oven why not do the job properly and put the microwave on it's own circuit?

Providing you are sure that the present Electrics in your kitchen are in a healthy condition and that you do in fact have a ring final Circuit installed, then yes it would normally be o.k. to supply it from an existing 13Amp socket. An alternative would be to run it off the cooker control unit socket ,if one is installed...this would be beneficial in reducing the demand on your existing kitchen Sockets circuit.

Thanks again for the information. There is a ring circuit installed. The cooker currently has its own separate connector that we're moving to the other side of the kitchen, but that won't be beside where the micro/grill is going (just to be awkward) so think will be safest for micro/grill to have its own connector and not be part of the ring/socket switches either.

This has been a great help, much appreciated.
