People who say "I went to The School of Hard Knocks and I graduated from The University of Life" or such like are quite often middle-aged men who feel insecure and inadequate.

Then again, those who post statements about womens' place being in the home and go onto middle aged men, could also be showing signs of insecurity, definitely signs of inadequacy and possibly signs of total stupidity. This a very rare occasion I agree with freddie's question.

Bought a sports car recently have you? Or grown a pony-tail? Or started thinning and so grown a beard?

I don't think that's entirely true. I know a balding middle-aged insecure inadequate man who says "I went to Harrow and graduated from the University of Oxford".

I think the only statement you could be sure of is that 99% of people who say "I went to the University of Life" are people who didn't go to university.

Also, I have found that anyone who says "I studied in Oxford" actually got their "Bachelor of Colouring In" or "Master of the Two Times Table" at Oxford Brookes Polytechnic.

Hi Freddie,

Thanks for your reply, as I have said before, I may not necessarily agree with my posts, I just like to stimulate.

But you don't know what I have experienced, however old I am.

SOME Middle-aged men seem to think they can lord it over younger men, and always think they know best.

I fully expect to be the same when I reach that certain age.

I am 29.

But I wish I didn't know what I do know, and wish I hadn't seen what I have seen.

O woe is me. It could even be a song.

He, He, easy now Adam, I know someone who went to Oxford Brookes University never yet have I slipped up and said Oxford poly, but one day I know it's gonna happen  BTW, you know when I say someone it wasn't me!!

My wife went to Oxford Poly (as she calls it) but I keep asking her that with a degree from Oxford how come she's not as clever as me. (I ususally don't stand too close though.) :)

It was the Oxford Polytechnic before changing its name to Oxford Brookes. When someone asks me where I was educated I can honestly answer "Oxford" - as this is where I have lived my life so far. I leave them to their assumptions.

I am 41 and have a beard, I have had a beard since I was 19, had long hair when I was 19 but not enough now for a pony tail (not enough for an ant's tail!). I never went to university, I tried sixth form life but lasted 3 hours. I preferred to go to work and have money.

Well next time show some respect to your elders! ;)

Plenty of age preening going down ....

:D :D :D

OK, now I have possibly offended one guy, someone else's colleague and another guy's wife...

The "I studied in Oxford" thing has come up twice for me... the first guy was someone I was at school with, his "Friends Reunited" entry was worded in such a way, but when I bumped into him and asked how Oxford Uni was he got a little embarassed and said he was at Oxford Brookes.

But the second time was for my godmother. She was interviewing candidates for a job (she is a magistrate), one woman had written something rather unusual on her CV regarding her education, and when asked she stated that she went to Oxford University. Upon further questionning (i.e. "We will need a copy of the certificate") it turned out she went to Brookes. According to my godmother, she was the number one candidate until that, but because she told a fib she lost the job. Degree from Oxford or degree from Brookes, she would have had the job.

I'm 25 by the way, but I've always insisted on practicing so by the time I'm 50 I'll be totally old g*t material.

Just a couple of years ago Brookes was rated above OU in the university qualifications league tables produced - similar to the much criticised school tables. Is a degree from Oxbridge valued more than a degree from elsewhere? If it is, is this genuine or just snobbery?
