MiG welder I am looking to buy requires a 230v 16 amp supply. Could someone please tell me what is needed to enable me to run this at home.

16 amp radial from your CU, to a 16A ceeform socket with a 20A DP switch nearby.

Very notifiable work, as its a new circuit. Read this

also if your on mcb's you will have to think about the type of mcb your going to fit, type D's are the usual for welding appliances to allow for the large inrush currents although you may get away with type C's.

also as crafty pointed out, notifiable work. the circuit will have to be tested for compliance.

There is a chance that it will run off a 13Amp plug, though. Maybe someone with a similar machine will know. Welders have a reputation for start-up surges.

It will run on a 13amp plug, however it may blow when you turn up the amps on the welder.

Out of curiosity, I don't think you'd need a new circuit, couldn't you wire in a 16amp MCB off the current ringmain? then from the 16A mcb connect your 16 Amp ceeform

Alternatively install a 32Amp ceeform straight from the ringmain?

Just suggesting some other options.

dont think this would be a very good idea!

ringmain could be RCD protected, earth leakage on weld sets.

new circuit with correct socket outlet is definetly the way to go.
