Mildew behind furniture

I'm getting mildew/blackening of walls in the corners of rooms against the outside walls, mostly where there is furniture in the corner.

What's the best way of removing it and is there anything I can paint on underneath or on top of the paint to stop it coming back? I'm redecorating anyway so it doesn't matter which.

this is typical of condensation. You need to cure the excess dampness and improve ventilation, then the mildew will die off and you can clean and decorate.

no point in doing it without fixing the cause.
