I recently bought an old Mini (not sure the exact model, but it's a 1275e) and started repairing it. I came across a problem though, my steering wheel is locked making it impossible to turn at all. After searching through the internet, the most common fix was do jiggle the ignition with the key inside while turning the steering wheel from side to side. This didnt work, seeing as the car didnt come with a key for the primary ignition as the previous owner hooked up another ignition. So is there anyway i can unlock the steering wheel so i can use it?

Thanks in advance

Hi there,

God do i miss my Minis!!!!

If the steering lock is on and you cant turn the ignition, the easiest way here would be to fit a new ignition barrell and then slowly try to release the lock. I have had loads of minis over the years and I've always managed to release the lock with a good wiggle!!!

Hope this helps.

Not sure if the barrel will come out without being able to turn it to a position that enebles it to come out. You might have to saw the whole lock off the column and replace the lot.

Drill thro the (Tamper proof) bolt heads & the lock mechanism falls away (Unlocking it) ...... two new anti tamper/shear bolts will cost you all of bout £4 ........ Std bolts wil be considerably cheaper ......

I used to just tap the anti-tamper bolts round with a little punch, they were never very tight. I used to just refit them with standard bolts to make it easy for the next guy, or thief.

I prefer a little Drama ........ Perhaps a shower of sparks from a angle grinder ......... Oh did I mention I lost my Mini thro fire ;)
