Can anyone tell me what a mist coat is for. I have in the past used one, when trying to hide a heavy colour underneath prior to fully painting. However I am wondering if there are any other benefits and why I need to dilute it (with water I guess).
The mist coat is basically a primer for bare plaster. If the emulsion were to be put on neat, without thinning the plaster would suck the moisture out of the emulsion and make it dry to quick. this would result in an uneven finish and the emulsion could peel off. The mist coat also gives a surface that can be sanded down and filled against.
