I have a 2-port valve (marked ML3501) with an actuator to switch my CH independently from the water heating. This valve is very stiff to turn, and too stiff for the actuator to move. On having a search round on the net for a replacement, I find that this reference number refers to a 1" valve but the pipework associated with it is most definitely 28mm.

Anyone know if ML3501s are both 1" or 28mm or if a 1" valve fits to 28mm pipe, or am I missing something?

I have a faint hope that I can save myself some work -- is it possible to take the mechanism from a new valve and insert it into the original body or do I need to replace the whole thing?

Your valve (Sunvic) has 1" female threads but if you look closely you will see that the 28mm compression ends are separate fittings that have 1" male threads that screw into the valve body. You don't have to replace the valve with the same make (but check wiring). Valves are available with 28mm compression ends from Honeywell, etc.
