Modern Army Recruitment?

B

Brigade77

Favourite nephew lost his long term girlfriend (sudden death) last year & at the ripe old age of 22 has now decided he wants to join the army.

His mother (my li'l Sis) is convinced this is because he's never really got over the girlfriends death & he's running away from his misery & I agree.

He's a big lad with a good head on his shoulders, I would dearly have liked him to join the family business but rather than play lego in construction he wanted to play tonka toys in plant hire, so he got himself an apprenticeship to become a fitter with a large civils plant Co' where he is VERY highly regarded.

I have no knowledge of modern forces recruitment. Will they be able/willing to distinguish someone who really wants to get their head chopped off in the Gulf & someone who just thinks life is pretty ****ty in this one horse town & maybe the grass is greener over there???

I would pay for him to go on a nice long holiday to clear his head. The army will chew him up - I assume he will go via non-com route? The only role you should countenance in the Army is being commsioned.

Yeah, we tried that approach.

He's set his heart on being involved with tanks & definately via the non commissioned route. This is a lad who stood in front of his dad at the age of 14 to stop him slapping his mum, so I really cannot see him taking any nonsense from a rupert.

Navy? I know a chap that joined the Navy when he left school - he became a naval aircraft engineer, and today now fixes private jets for very wealthy people.
Might be safer than the army!

They won't care unless he presents as a proper nut-job who wants to legally kill people. It's a numbers game- they'll recruit and let the system sort things out after.

Sounds like he is going in with entirely the wring attitude, for all the wrong reasons, with a huge chip on his shoulder..Disaster waiting to happen. The army is not there for bereavement counciling of recruits on joining.

Entirely different...first is instinctive..Anyone would do it.The army would chew him up and spit him out with that sort of """rupert""" mentality.

The army is an armed force. They go to war..People try to kill them..So he wants to play tank tank but not go to war? Too precious?

An army runs on discipline irrespective of the fact the orders might be wrong. I would personally do everything in my power to create something positive he can put all his efforts into. Does he like cars? Has he any interest in starting a business?

Has he looked at VSO, challenging and rewarding, certainly diverts your thoughts from your own bad stuff
